Most embroidery lettering is 15 mm high or less although Hatch Embroidery provides fonts suitable for small and for large lettering. At normal sizes, columns are less than 3 mm wide for normal – not heavy or block – fonts. Such objects are best served with a single Center Run or Edge Run underlay or both. Hatch Embroidery decides on a suitable underlay for normal purposes though this can be overriden in Object Properties.
Lettering with heights under 5 mm should not have underlay.
Lettering 6 mm to 10 mm can use a center-run underlay.
Lettering larger than 10 mm can use an edge-run underlay.
Large lettering for jacket backs and the like can use a second layer of underlay. Double-zigzag is sometimes used for added loft. For even more loft, try using Raised Satin.
With fancy fonts such as ‘Charcuterie’, the minimum height is 20mm, the maximum 65mm. Even at 20mm, Auto Split should be turned on otherwise stitch length will be too long for domestic machines.
You need to generate fonts at the recommended sizes (25mm-50mm) to clearly see their characteristics. For instance, ‘Engraved Serif’ includes an open tatami fill while ‘Invitation’ has no fill.
Some small fonts may require the use of different needles and threads for the font to work.
