Sometimes you may receive a character design file containing an entire character set. You can map these for use as a KDC font. In this case, you need to select each character in the design window and map it to the corresponding slot in the target KDC. If your font includes ‘descenders’ which drop below the baseline, you need to pay attention to reference height and baseline position.
1Open the design file and Keyboard Design Collection docker.
2Create a keyboard design collection via the New button. The New Keyboard Design Collection dialog opens.
3Enter a name for the collection and enter a reference height.
With this font, we have a mixture of upper-case and lower-case characters. To ensure relative scaling of all letters, use the average height of the tallest characters in the collection. These are usually uppercase letters. The letter ‘M’ commonly represents the average height.
Tip: The easiest way to specify reference height is to select a reference character – e.g. ‘M’ – and click the Use Selection button. This will assign the height of the selected character directly to the Reference Height field. Round off as necessary – e.g. ‘25 mm’.
4Optionally, specify character spacing and recommended height range.
5Select characters and map them one-by-one.
